Questions
Is Part 108 in effect yet?
Not yet. The FAA proposed it in August 2025 and the final rule is in its last review. Paperwing follows the proposed rule today and updates its limits and documents when the final rule publishes. Until then, flying beyond visual line of sight still needs a waiver or exemption.
Is the population category from the route check official?
No. It is a screening estimate from town and built-up-area data. The FAA assigns categories from LandScan USA population data. Use the estimate to plan, then confirm it before you apply.
Does Paperwing guarantee FAA approval?
No. Paperwing drafts documents and checks them against the rule, but the FAA decides. Review every draft, fill in the items marked for confirmation, and consider a review by an aviation attorney for complex operations.
Do my crew need a remote pilot certificate under Part 108?
Under the proposal, no. The FAA approves the operator, and the operator trains and qualifies its own people. Operations supervisors and flight coordinators do need TSA security threat assessments.
